MG M9 Electric

After a prolonged slump in sales, MG Motor has made a strong comeback with the successful launch of the Windsor EV last year. Now, the brand is gearing up to strengthen its presence in the Indian market with the launch of its premium MPV the MG M9. Slated for release on July 21, 2025, the M9 is set to take on established rivals like the Kia Carnival while offering a more affordable alternative to the Toyota Vellfire.

MG plans to offer the M9 through its Select dealership network, aiming it at premium MPV customers who prioritise spacious interiors, high comfort levels, and advanced electric vehicle (EV) features. With its ultra-luxurious features, spacious cabin, and zero-emission powertrain, the M9 promises to be a game-changer in the segment.

A Spacious and Luxurious MPV

One of the standout aspects of the MG M9 is its sheer size. Measuring 5,270mm in length with a 3,200mm wheelbase, the M9 is even longer than the Toyota Vellfire, ensuring ample space for all occupants. The long wheelbase translates into generous legroom, making it an ideal choice for families and corporate buyers who prioritize comfort.

Premium Seating with Business-Class Comfort

The second-row Ottoman seats are the highlight of the M9’s interior. These seats can be electrically adjusted in 16 different ways, offering unparalleled comfort. Additionally, they come with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, making long journeys a relaxing experience. The third row is also spacious enough to accommodate adults comfortably, unlike many other MPVs where the last row is often cramped.

Feature-Loaded Cabin

MG has loaded the M9 with high-end features to enhance the overall driving and riding experience. The cabin boasts a 13-speaker JBL sound system for an immersive audio experience, a panoramic sunroof to create an airy feel, and electric sliding doors for easy access. The interior is further enhanced by 64-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control with rear AC vents, and a large touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The use of premium upholstery, soft-touch materials, and a minimalist dashboard design adds to the sophisticated appeal of the M9.

Battery & Performance

The M9 is powered by a 90kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 548km on a single charge (under ideal conditions). The electric motor produces 243bhp and 350Nm of peak torque, ensuring smooth acceleration and effortless highway cruising.

MG is expected to offer fast-charging capabilities, allowing the M9 to recharge from 10% to 80% in under 40 minutes using a DC fast charger. For home charging, a standard AC charger will take approximately 7-8 hours for a full charge.

What sets the MG M9 apart from its rivals is its fully electric powertrain. Unlike rivals such as the Kia Carnival, which use diesel powertrains, the M9 delivers a quiet, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient ride.

Expected Price & Market Positioning

MG plans to introduce the M9 through the SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) route, which typically means higher costs due to import taxes. However, the company aims to keep the price competitive, with an expected on-road price of under ₹70 lakh in Mumbai. This positions it as a more affordable alternative to the Toyota Vellfire, which costs over ₹1.2 crore, while offering more advanced features and sustainability compared to the Kia Carnival, priced between ₹40-50 lakh.

If MG gets the pricing right, the M9 could attract buyers looking for a premium MPV with the added benefits of an electric vehicle lower running costs, zero emissions, and cutting-edge technology.

Final Thoughts

The MG M9 is set to redefine the luxury MPV segment in India with its spacious cabin, premium features, and zero-emission electric powertrain. Although the final price will be a key factor in its success, MG’s focus on delivering a premium product with advanced technology could help it establish a unique position in the market.

With the launch just around the corner, the M9 has the potential to become a strong contender against the Kia Carnival while offering a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional luxury MPVs. If MG gets the pricing strategy right, the M9 has the potential to become a major player in India’s premium car segment.
