Tejas Mk1A

In a major boost for India’s defense manufacturing, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to roll out the first Tejas Mk1A fighter jet from its new production line in Nashik by the end of July 2025. This marks a significant milestone for HAL as it expands its Tejas production to a third facility, strengthening India’s self-reliance in defense.

Expanding Production for the Indian Air Force

The Nashik facility is expected to produce three to four Tejas Mk1A jets in its first year, with plans to scale up to eight aircraft annually in the coming years. This expansion is part of HAL’s larger strategy to ramp up production and meet the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) growing demand for these advanced fighter. HAL aims for a production rate of 30 Tejas jets per year by 2026-27, maximizing capacity at its plants.

The Tejas Mk1A is an upgraded version of the original Tejas, featuring advanced radar, improved avionics, and better combat capabilities. The IAF has already placed an order for 83 Mk1A jets, with deliveries expected to be completed in the next few years.

Astra Missile Integration: A Key Step

The Tejas Mk1A will undergo Astra air-to-air missile integration and test-firing starting early August, immediately following its rollout phase. The Astra, an indigenous beyond-visual-range missile, will significantly enhance the fighter jet’s combat effectiveness, allowing it to engage enemy aircraft at long distances.

Why This Matters

This Nashik milestone significantly advances India’s defense autonomy. HAL’s expanded manufacturing capabilities will accelerate delivery of these sophisticated jets to the IAF, cutting down import dependence. The Tejas program also supports local industries, creating jobs and boosting the aerospace sector.

As HAL prepares for this milestone, all eyes will be on Nashik, where India’s defense capabilities continue to soar. With more Tejas jets set to take to the skies, the future of the IAF looks stronger than ever.
